As of May 1, 2025, British Columbia is implementing new regulations requiring all short-term rental (STR) operators to register their properties.

Key Details of the New Registration Process

  • Registration Deadline: All STR hosts must register by May 1, 2025.
  • Early Registration Incentive: Hosts who register by March 31, 2025, will receive a 25% discount on their registration fees.
  • Registration Fees:
    • Primary Residence Rentals: $100 annually.
    • Secondary Properties: $450 annually.
    • Strata Hotels: $600 annually.
  • Consequences of Non-Compliance:
    • Listings without a valid registration number will be removed from platforms starting May 1, 2025.
    • Any future bookings will be canceled beginning June 1, 2025.

    • Without registration, STR listings will be removed from platforms like Airbnb, VRBO, and Booking.com.
    • Future reservations will be automatically canceled starting June 1, 2025.

    • Some STR owners may transition their properties to long-term rentals if the fees and registration process make short-term renting less appealing.
