Moving Made Simple: Tips from Your Golden, BC Realtor
There’s little doubt that Canadians are on the move. Whether upgrading from an apartment to a house, downsizing, or simply relocating across town, moving is no small task. It takes planning, patience, and a whole lot of tape. But with some smart strategies and an organized approach, the transition into your new home can be smoother—and even enjoyable.
As your local REALTOR® here in Golden, BC, I’ve helped countless clients navigate not just the buying or selling process—but everything that comes after. Moving can feel overwhelming, but I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
Start with Advance Planning
Give yourself a minimum of two months to prepare for your move. Confirm your closing date with your REALTOR® before locking in your move date. If you’re renting, double-check your move-in availability to avoid overlap or last-minute surprises.
Start a checklist of records that will need transferring—school records, medical files, financial documents, pet info, and anything time-sensitive. And whether you’re moving across the street or to a new province, now is the time to decide what truly needs to come with you. A serious declutter session can save you time, money, and space.
Consider a garage sale or donate unused items to local charities (and ask for receipts for tax purposes). Bonus: Golden has some great community Facebook groups for local selling and giveaways!
Handle Your Address Change Like a Pro
Notify organizations of your new address 4–6 weeks in advance. That includes banks, subscription services, loyalty cards, government accounts, and of course—friends and family. Don’t forget to leave forwarding instructions with the post office.
Planning a DIY move? Ask friends and neighbours to lend a hand—and sweeten the deal with pizza and cold drinks. Label your boxes clearly and take inventory of borrowed items (you don’t want to pay to ship your neighbour’s rake cross-country).
This is also a good time to safely dispose of hazardous materials, like gasoline or cleaning fluids, that can’t go on the moving truck. And check—did you drain the lawnmower?
Utilities, Banking, and Day-of Essentials
About two weeks before moving day, contact utility providers to schedule service disconnection at your current home and connection at your new one. Clear up outstanding bills and transfer or open new banking accounts in your new town so you’re never caught without access to funds.
If you’re moving far, make sure your vehicle is serviced—breakdowns on the highway are no fun. Schedule checkups with doctors and dentists before the move, especially if you need medical prescriptions or referrals for your next provider.
Packing Tips from a Golden Local
Start packing early. Begin with things you use the least—seasonal items, books, decor. Use what you have: towels and blankets for padding, bins for books, and label everything. Write not just the room, but what’s inside (“Kitchen – Plates & Mugs”) to avoid digging through 20 boxes for your morning coffee mug.
Make a list of must-have items for your first few days—snacks, utensils, paper towels, lightbulbs, chargers—and pack those in an accessible bin or suitcase. Keep important documents, like ID, insurance, and medication, in a folder you can access at any time.
Moving Day
Whether you’ve hired movers or you’re doing it with friends, be ready when the truck arrives. Keep water or coffee on hand and stay nearby to direct the process. Walk through the home one last time to ensure nothing’s left behind (check drawers, closets, shelves).
Leave keys with your REALTOR®, property manager, or buyer. Then take a deep breath—you did it!
Once in your new home, unpack room by room, beginning with essentials. Don’t rush. Give yourself time to settle in and make your new place truly yours.
